I have loved to ride bikes ever since I can remember. I started racing when I was 9 years old in 1986 at Apache Land BMX in Sanger, CA. I am in my 23rd year of racing and about to start my 14th season as a professional. Along the way I have been blessed with a great support system of family and friends, starting with my parents who have been amazing since day one, and also my wife, Carrie, and three kids, William, Julia and Noah, who motivate me every day to do my best. I am also thankful for my riding buddies out at Reedley Airtime BMX and FBX in Fresno who keep things fun and also my church family at Woodward Park Church of Christ in Fresno. And my buddy and trainer German Medina. And of course my friend and agent Pete Dylewski who I have known since he sent me my first (wrong) order of parts after I got on Powerlite in 1993. Some of the highlights in my career have been winning the UCI World Championships in Elite Cruiser 4 years in a row, winning the ABA National Title in Pro Cruiser 5 years in a row, and winning 2 NBL Elite Men’s titles of which the latest was this past year in 2008. I spend my days training and trying to be better at my sport and hanging out with my family in between. I usually get up and help get the kids fed and started on their day. I load William and Julia in the wagon and pull them down the street while riding my bike for a warm-up. Then I usually head to the gym for an hour or two. I’ll come home after that and have a little lunch and then William and I usually head outside to either ride or do some sprints. He’s my best training partner. Then we settle in for some afternoon rest time and I try to get some chores done before dinner. That’s how most days go and I love it because I get to be around my family so much. In 2009 you can find me at most ABA and NBL national events along with the UCI World Championships in Australia. If you are local to the Fresno area make sure to check out the NBL nationals held at FBX in Woodward Park May 16-17 2009.

Where I have been spending most of my time....thanks German

Lately I have been spending a lot of time at the gym since I haven't raced in almost two months.  My trainer German Medina (from Bogota, Columbia) always dials in my training schedule every week and it has been some hard work lately.  I have been working with German since 2001 and within a year after starting to work with him I had dramatic improvements in my racing.  He has been a great friend and a great guy to work with and I appreciate all he has done for me.
Here I am in Bogota with German and his wife Connie.

Here is the entrance to the gym where I work out in Sanger.  U Can 2, owned by the Cantu's, hence the name.  It's a 5 minute drive from my house or an 18 minute bike ride if it is nice out.
Here is one of the reasons I like this gym, I can go in the late morning and almost have the entire free weight room to myself and get my workout done quickly.  Another reason I like working out here is I have not seen anyone lift their shirt to check out their abs in the mirror in the four years I have been going here.  That used to be an every day occurence at Bally's.

Here is the sign they started out with to kindly remind you to put your weights back.

This is the sign that is now up.  This is actually one of my pet peeves.  It bothers me when I see people work out and then leave all their plates on the bar and leave, like they think the next person wants to start out with that same weight.

ok i cant take it anymore. i cant read your updates every day. that picture with german at the hotel in colombia? thats an ok place. im gonna start working out at your gym because i spend more time flexing my abs than i do working out. so, you can work out and ill distract you by lifting my shirt up a lot. and my biggest pet peeve is people who think i should re-rack the weights for them. im there to workout, not fancy the place up. besides, at my gym there is a guy whom i call re-racker
